Our lab-tested Mushroom Compost is a nutrient-rich, manure-free compost option for adding to gardens and potted plants! This compost is made from recycled mushroom substrate, and includes beneficial fungal strains that will help boost water retention and nutrient cycling in your planter of choice!
40 lbs of our fresh mushroom compost yields roughly 0.75 cubic feet of coverage.
Mushroom compost derived from spent mushroom spawn and turned every three days to ensure a uniform biologically diverse compost.
Hands down the best compost money can buy, nutrient and biologically rich in beneficial microbes. Tested at Cornell Universities' Soil Lab and Tennessee's very own compost expert Troy Hinke of "Living Roots Compost Tea"
Here is what they had to say:
"This compost is looking great biologically!!!
“I don't usually see so many nematodes. You had good counts on everything. The protozoa count was a little low but still good. The low count will be made up by all the bacterial-feeding nematodes that I saw. This means you will have good nutrient cycling within the soil. The fungal to bacterial ratio is near perfect for the plants that you are growing.”
-Troy Hinke Living Roots Compost Tea
"It would most likely be good for pretty much anything."
-Mary Schwarz
How much compost do you need?
Check out our bed size calculator:
The rule of thumb to remember is that for every sq. foot of garden space, you will need to add compost that is Two inches deep.
One 40 lb bag of mushroom compost, can cover approximately Eight square feet at a depth of Two inches.
One cubic yard of material will cover approximately 162 square feet (see this listing to purchase bulk compost for pickup)!
Henosis/ Living Roots Compost Tea- 5 Gal. Brew
*Note: Brew in a location with the same ambient temperature as plants to be sprayed.
Build a home for soil microbes (Water): If using tap water, fill a clean 5-gallon bucket and allow it to sit out for 24-48 hours to off-gas chlorine/chloramine and acclimate the temperature of water to ambient. You could also use an air pump and bubble for 12 hours or simply use rainwater.
Feed your microbial friends (Brew): Empty the two small vials of microbial foods (humic acid and fish hydrolysate/kelp) into 5 gallons of water. Place the brew bag, with compost, into the bucket and secure elastic around the top of the bucket. Use your hand to squeeze and massage the compost for 3-5 minutes. Solution can be used immediately or brewed to increase microbial populations.
Give them oxygen If using an aerator to brew, aerate the compost tea for no longer than 6-12 hours. Do not use airstones on the air pump tubing. I like to use old forks and place the ¼ inch tubing between fork tines. This keeps the tube opening on the bottom of the bucket and air bubbles traveling through the entire column of water. If not using an aerator, stir as often as possible and brew no longer than 6 hours. Use the compost tea within 12 hours of brewing.
Application: Compost tea can be diluted in water to make it easier to apply to a larger area. For example, if you know it takes five watering cans to water your garden, split the compost tea into fifths. If it takes 50 gallons to cover a certain area, add it to 45 gallons of water.
